2026  May Grace Notes On the Theme of Beauty

Beauty meets us and calls us into belonging, moving through grasslands where wind and horizon teach us to breathe. It shimmers in light and land, inviting us to notice and remember our place.

The 2026 Spiritual Themes and Story: Geography of the Spirit – Landscapes of the Soul

To him who contemplates a trait of natural beauty
no harm nor disappointment can come.
The doctrines of despair, or spiritual or political tyranny or servitude,
were never taught by such as shared the serenity of nature.

— Henry David Thoreau

May is an interesting time of year and the perfect time to explore beauty both as a spiritual practice and a way of being. In ancient times, the Romans dedicated May to Maia, the goddess of growing things, the earth, and springtime, and also a patroness of elders who were celebrated in this month. The name of the month might also derive from the Maiores, the spirits of the ancestors, often venerated by the ancient Romans. Suffice it to say this moment, like so many others, is rich with meaning and significance, pointing toward memory and beauty. More than anything, for me, May is one of those thresholds between realities, spring and summer; offering us a way of having a foot in both worlds and perhaps all worlds at once. That idea of memory and beauty is what I hope to hold in mind in May as we make our way through this time.
As we come close to the end of our narrative and artistic journey this program year, we have visited a number of landscapes. Some of these places were closer to home, and others far away. This month, in our geography of the spirit, we cross the Mississippi again and find ourselves in the great plains and central prairies of the Midwest. The painting “Evening on the Prairie” by nineteenth century landscape artist Albert Bierstadt, a preeminent American interpreter of the western landscape, offers us a window into the solitude and serenity of nature and invites us to experience the power of beauty as a connection to deep time and meaning.
And so, as we stand in this wide and windswept landscape, the iconic prairie stretching beyond sight and the sky holding both day and dusk, we are invited into a particular kind of seeing. Beauty here is not merely something to admire but something to enter. It is a way of paying attention, a way of belonging to what we see. In the long grasses bending with the wind and in the slow turning of light across the horizon, we glimpse what it means to live within beauty rather than apart from it.
Perhaps this is the grace of May, that in this threshold season we are called to notice more deeply, to remember more fully, and to let beauty shape how we move through the world. May we learn to see as the prairie sees, with patience, with openness, and with a sense of deep time, rooted time stretching beneath our feet.
And may we become, in our own lives, not just seekers of beauty but bearers of it.
